The Science of Clean
How GRIT’s Natural Ingredients Defend Against Bacteria and Fungus
Training hard comes with its share of skin challenges — sweat, shared mats, locker rooms, and constant physical contact create a perfect environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive.
That’s why every GRIT bar is built on four time-tested, natural defenders: Tea Tree, Oregano, Myrrh, and Sidr.
Each ingredient carries proven antibacterial or antifungal power, grounded in both science and tradition — and together, they form the backbone of GRIT’s skin defense system.
1. Tea Tree — The Powerhouse from Nature’s Lab
Scientific Insight:
Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) is one of the most studied essential oils for antimicrobial activity.
Multiple clinical studies have shown its ability to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa — microorganisms often linked to skin infections, athlete’s foot, and body odor.
In a 2006 review published in the Clinical Microbiology Reviews, researchers confirmed Tea Tree oil’s broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal properties, largely due to its main active compound, terpinen-4-ol.
Why It Matters for Athletes:
Training mats, gloves, and gym gear collect microbes fast. Tea Tree oil helps reduce the bacterial load on the skin post-training, lowering the risk of breakouts and infections without disrupting the skin barrier.
Regional Relevance:
Tea Tree is native to Australia, but its use aligns perfectly with the UAE’s push toward natural wellness and clean formulations — especially as local athletes and gyms become more ingredient-conscious.
GRIT integrates Tea Tree not as a trend, but as a proven protector for those who train under the UAE’s hot, humid, and sweat-heavy conditions.

2. Oregano — Nature’s Antifungal Heavyweight
Scientific Insight:
Oregano oil (Origanum vulgare) contains carvacrol and thymol, compounds recognized for their strong antimicrobial activity.
Research published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology demonstrated that carvacrol disrupts the membrane integrity of bacteria and fungi, including Candida species and Trichophyton rubrum, a common cause of athlete’s foot.
Why It Matters for Athletes:
Sweat-prone areas — feet, chest, back — are breeding grounds for fungal growth. Oregano oil helps suppress these organisms, providing long-lasting protection between training sessions.
Its natural potency makes it one of the strongest botanical defenses for athletes who sweat and shower multiple times a day.
Regional Relevance:
Oregano grows naturally across the Mediterranean basin, including parts of the Levant — connecting GRIT’s ingredient story to regional agriculture and heritage.
It’s a Mediterranean classic with real function, not filler.

3. Myrrh — Ancient Healing, Modern Science
Scientific Insight:
Used in traditional medicine since ancient Egypt and Arabia, Myrrh resin (Commiphora myrrha) has gained renewed attention for its antibacterial and wound-healing properties.
A study in the Journal of Medicinal Plants Research (2010) found Myrrh extracts effective against S. aureus and E. coli, with significant anti-inflammatory benefits.
Its phenolic compounds and sesquiterpenes are known to promote tissue regeneration and skin recovery.
Why It Matters for Athletes:
Myrrh helps the skin recover from microtears, mat burns, and friction-related irritation. It’s a natural antiseptic that complements the harsher cleansing action of Tea Tree and Oregano — keeping GRIT bars both strong and skin-friendly.
Regional Relevance:
Myrrh has deep cultural roots in the Arabian Peninsula, where it was traded for thousands of years through routes connecting Yemen, Oman, and the UAE’s ancient ports.
By including Myrrh, GRIT honors that regional legacy — using an ingredient that’s been valued locally for its healing power since pre-Islamic times.

4. Sidr — The Cleansing Heritage of Arabia
Scientific Insight:
The Sidr tree (Ziziphus spina-christi) is rich in saponins — natural cleansing agents that gently lift impurities without stripping the skin.
A 2018 study in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine highlighted Sidr’s antibacterial and antioxidant properties, noting its use in traditional medicine for wound care and skin purification.
Why It Matters for Athletes:
Frequent showers can dry the skin. Sidr restores balance — cleansing effectively while maintaining hydration.
It’s particularly beneficial for those training in hot climates like the UAE, where over-cleansing is a common cause of dryness and irritation.
Regional Relevance:
Sidr is part of the Emirati natural heritage, often used in traditional cleansing rituals and even in burial rites for its purity.
In GRIT soaps, Sidr represents a bridge between modern performance hygiene and ancient Arabian wisdom — the ultimate local touch in a global formula.
